Which Midterm Big Spender Has Contributed The Most Since The 2018 Election?

Small donors might be all the rage, but big money isn’t going away.

In fact, with a record $5.7 billion spent, the 2018 congressional elections were the most expensive in history—and mega-donors made unprecedented donations. The following four gave the most*: Sheldon and Miriam Adelson; Tom Steyer and Kathryn Taylor; Richard and Elizabeth Uihlein; and Michael Bloomberg.

*That is, gave the most on the record, as “many of them have also probably given an unknown amount of ‘dark money’ to organizations that can avoid disclosure due to a complex regulatory.”

So which midterm big spender has contributed the most since the 2018 election?

We took a look at the top four political donors from last cycle. (Sign up for a FREE Starter Account and conduct your own searches on the rest of the mega-donors determining the direction of American politics.)

Sheldon and Miriam Adelson

The CEO and chairman of gambling empire Las Vegas Sands and his wife are two of the most prominent Republican donors today. But after spending $113 million over the course of the 2018 congressional elections, the Adelsons have kept relatively quiet, mirroring each other’s $2,700 donations (four each) to add up to $21,600 in all.

Thomas Steyer and Kathryn Taylor

Deemed “the progressive answer to the Koch brothers,” the former hedge fund manager-turned-environmental champion has been an outspoken advocate for the Need to Impeach President Donald Trump, as he and his wife funnel massive amounts of money—over $50 million between 2017 and 2018—into liberal and nonpartisan causes. Since the midterms, Steyer has given $6,385,600, $5,953,000 of which went to NextGen America.

Richard and Elizabeth Uihlein

The biggest Republican mega-donors you’ve never heard of,” the Uihleins burst onto the scene during the 2018 midterms when they spent $39 millions reshaping the GOP. They’ve spent another $657,450 since as they continue to exert their power over national and Illinois politics.

Michael Bloomberg

The billionaire businessman made waves in 2018 when he (once again) declared himself a Democrat, despite leaving the party in 2001 to run for mayor of New York City as a Republican before leaving the GOP in 2007 to become an Independent. Since the midterms, he has spent $9,243,667.41, an overwhelming majority of that ($9,195,367.41 to be exact) going to his own Independence USA PAC.
